De Europese Volkspartij (EVP) is de grootste politieke partij en fractie in het Europees Parlement. De partij heeft op dit moment 177 zetels in het parlement. Samen met de sociaaldemocratiche S&D en het liberale RE zit de EVP in de Europese Commissie. De Europese Commissie is verantwoordelijk voor het besturen van de Europese Unie, het indienen van wetsvoorstellen, het beheren van de financiën en het vertegenwoordigen van de Europese Unie. Net zoals bij iedere Europese partij het geval is, wordt de Europese Volkspartij gevormd door afgevaardigden van nationale partijen. Namens Nederland zijn het CDA en de ChristenUnie lid van de EVP. Namens België zijn CD&V, cdH en CSP lid.

Ideologie

Een ideologie is een verzameling van ideeën over hoe de samenleving gevormd moet worden (welke regels er zouden moeten zijn en hoe de rangorde aan de hand van die regels bepaald wordt) en aan de hand van welke waarden en normen ze moet functioneren (wie welke taken krijgt en hoe deze taken uitgevoerd moeten worden).

De Europese Volkspartij is een christendemocratische partij. Dat wil zeggen dat de partij voorstander van de democratie, de democratische rechtsstaat en de vrijheid van godsdienst is, maar van mening is het christelijke karakter van Europese landen benadrukt moet worden. Christendemocraten betrekken de Bijbel bij het bepalen van waarden en normen, maar zullen die niet als leidraad voor de gehele samenleving uitdragen.
