Het productiebedrijf werd opgericht op 21 april 2008 en heeft zijn hoofdkantoor in Parijs, Frankrijk.

Lucasfilm is 2012 eigendom geworden van Disney. Vanaf dan is het een volledige dochteronderneming van Disney. Pixar Animation Studios was de animatie afdeling van het bedrijf tot 1986 toen het aan Steve Jobs werd verkocht. Op 5 mei 2006 werd Pixar onderdeel van Disney. THX Ltd. is het geluidssysteem dat door Lucasfilm is ontwikkeld voor de bioscopen. Sinds 2002 is dat een zelfstandig bedrijf. De computerspelontwikkelstudio van Lucas werd in 2012 aan Disney verkocht, maar is sinds 2013 opgehouden.

Lucasfilm werd opgericht in 1971 door George Lucas.
