Henry James (New York City, 15 april 1843 - Londen, 28 februari 1916) was een belangrijke Amerikaans-Britse schrijver. James werd geboren in de Verenigde Staten, maar verhuisde later naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Eén jaar voor zijn dood kreeg bij de Britse nationaliteit. Hij wordt gezien als een van de belangrijkste vertegenwoordigers van het realisme in de Engelstalige literatuur. Ook wordt beschouwd als een overgangsfiguur tussen het realisme en het modernisme.

James schreef romans, korte verhalen, toneelstukken en non-fictie. Hij staat bekend om zijn complex en poëtisch taalgebruik. In zijn boeken zette hij vaak de Nieuwe Wereld (Amerika) tegenover de Oude Wereld (Europa). Volgens James was de Oude Wereld artistiek en mooi, terwijl de Nieuwe Wereld koud en leeg was. Enkele bekende werken van Henry James zijn Daisy Miller, The Bostonians, The Portrait of a Lady, What Maisie Knew, The Turn of the Screw, The Wings of the Dove en The Ambassadors.

Henry James was de broer van filosoof William James en schrijfster Alice James.
