Het Europees kampioenschap voetbal 1988, kortom het EK 1988, was de achtste editie van het Europees kampioenschap voetbal. Het toernooi werd van 10 juni tot 25 juni 1988 georganiseerd in de Bondsrepubliek Duitsland, dat toen ook wel "West-Duitsland" werd genoemd.

Er deden acht landen mee aan het EK. Doordat het toernooi in West-Duitsland werd georganiseerd waren ze als gastland zijnde direct geplaatst. De overige zeven landen moesten zich vooraf aan het EK kwalificeren om mee te mogen doen. Frankrijk, dat op het EK in 1984 nog won, werd in de kwalificatieronde uitgeschakeld door de Sovjet-Unie. België wist zich ook niet te kwalificeren, doordat het derde werd in de kwalificatiegroep, achter Ierland en Bulgarije.

Nederland wist in de finale met 2-0 van de Sovjet-Unie te winnen. Hiermee behaalde het Nederlands elftal zijn eerste, en tot op heden ook de enige, Europese titel.

Op dit EK werd er geen enkele speler van het veld gestuurd met een rode kaart. Ook was er in geen enkele wedstrijd van de knock-out fases een verlenging of strafschoppenserie nodig en werd er bij elke wedstrijd op dit EK minimaal één doelpunt gemaakt.

Speelsteden

Het was aanvankelijk de bedoeling om West-Berlijn ook als speelstad te gebruiken. Omdat Berlijn in die tijd erg politiek omstreden was en de Duitse voetbalbond anders in gevaar zou komen als gastland, werd later besloten om niet in West-Berlijn te spelen.
