As only a part ofthe army needed to be carried from Italy—thebulk being formed of the legions stationed fur-ther north and west—the problem of taking themacross the Adriatic was not arduous. In thesculptured historic scenes of the war on the col-umn we see the scene of embarkation at the port,near the arch which, as at present, adjoins thequay: the whole topography of the scene in therelief fits into that of Ancona, including the tem-ple on the heights. But where are the troopsbound? One wild theory takes them on vesselsas far as the Bosphorus. I agree with ProfessorBulic and with Petersen in thinking that Trajancarried the troops almost straight across toSalona, which was not only the nearest largeport, but the central starting point for the main L sCd- Pubblica Marina. For confirmation of this theory, itwould be natural to look for some record of re-pairs on the Dalmatian military roads by Trajanin view of this march. We know how fore-handed he was in this particular; how he had thegreat road along the Danube through the IronGates constructed in 100, a year before the firstDacian war, and how he set Apollodorus at workon the great bridge over the Danube in 101. Soit is without surprise, that we see in the C. I. L.and in the Dalmatian Bollettino of Bulic, the in-scribed milestones from this region that proveTrajans restoration of the roads, one of themnear Salona itself at Trau, relating to the Viamunita along the coast. Trajans stay in Dalmatia and its connectionwith the Dacian campaign is shown in variousways
