On verso of image: In 1879, NP grading crews were busily constructing right-of-way through Dakota territory. This picture shows the Big Cut, Sweet Briar Valley. Note the men in the foreground awaiting another and oncoming wagon. There are fifty men, twenty five on each side, and the wagon does not stop, and by the time the wagon is through the line, the wagon has been filled. The "pointed" floor boards of the wagon are such that by "pulling up" on one of the 2" x 4" floor boards, the wagon is unloaded at the "fill" in the distance from this "cut." Our "old timers" were pretty resourceful.
